PRESENTER: GRACIE BITGOOD, OTD

TOPIC: BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS: AN OT’S NON-TRADITIONAL ROLE ON AN EFFECTIVE SCHOOL-WIDE DISCIPLINARY TEAM

Description: This presentation will explore the role the presenting OT took on with an Effective School-wide Disciplinary Team. As an Occupational Therapist, we are skilled in the areas of adapting and grading activities in a variety of ways, which can also translate to facilitating learning and understanding of behavior for teachers and administration. Putting ourselves in positions where we can grade activities to increase behavioral responses from both students and teachers can impact our schools tremendously. This presentation is aimed to energize OTs to understand how far reaching our roles in the schools can be; as well as how rewarding our efforts can be when we advocate for our skills to be most appropriately utilized. OTs are NOT handwriting teachers and this presentation is designed to encourage school based OTs to break down this myth by using all our skill sets to best serve our school based population.
