The 2016 Annual Conference Was A Great Event! To Recap:

First, a huge thank you to all who attended VOTA’s Annual Conference, Flowing into the Centennial Vision, at the Virginia Gateway in Richmond October 14-16, 2016. Nearly 50 people attended the 4 pre-conference institutes held on Friday and one hundred eighty-four attended the conference over the Saturday and Sunday sessions. We were delighted to have Daniel Goldsmith, music therapist, deliver a fun and interactive keynote to kick off the weekend!  We also enjoyed all of the presentations across the 2 days, including the many poster presentations, with over 90% positive feedback from the attendee survey!  What a great success!

During Saturday’s business meeting, new President Erin Clemens shared her passion for OT and goals for VOTA in the future including building a strong membership base, the importance of building personal connections, and personally recruiting members to serve VOTA in various capacities.  We also recognized our colleagues and students:

  • Deborah Schwind was the winner of the VOTA OT Award of Merit
  • Jayne Shepherd of VCU won the first VOTA Award of Merit- Educator award
  • OT/OTA Scholarship winners of were Sarah Matthew from Radford University and Kara Fox from Tidewater CC
  • Jamie Guzman from Shenandoah University won the Barbara Howard scholarship

Congratulations to all of the awardees!

We also would like to thank our sponsors and exhibitors who were set up and helped make the event possible. A big thank you also goes out to all who donated to the silent auction and raffle on Saturday night to support our scholarships. It was once again a huge success and a lot of fun raising around $3,000!  Thank you to the Capitol District and conference organizing team as well.  We could not do it without you!

If you are feeling like you missed out in October, never fear!  You don’t have to wait until next year!  We are looking forward to the upcoming School System Symposium on March 10-11 in Virginia Beach. Please join us for more exciting learning, networking and professional development opportunities. Rumor has it we will be raising more money for scholarships here as well so come prepared to support us and have a good time.
